The height of the vehicles from the ground can often become a problem. Vehicles with low bottoms experience difficulties in the village, on the mountain, on rough roads such as mountain roads.

The lowest point of the car measured in the middle of the road surface for the shortest distance is called the gap. There are many different protrusions, recesses, inserts in the lower part of the machine, and therefore it is not so easy to find the lower point by eye. To solve this problem, follow the rule: the lowest and most vulnerable point of the car is located under the engine. The transmission is mounted slightly higher than the exhaust system “engine”.

Remember to consider the protection under the engine when calculating the clearance. It is usually a metal or plastic skirt located evenly under the power unit and serves to protect the engine from breakdown. Of course, the factory plastic protection will not be able to seriously protect the engine, for example, from a rock, but it will take a few centimeters of ground clearance.

Therefore, taking into account the size of the gap when choosing a car in the salon or on the market, ask about the actual size of the ground clearance, as many manufacturers specify the gap without taking into account protection. Therefore, the specified ground clearance may be 160 mm, for example, but can be significantly reduced to 140 mm.

In this case, the ground clearance increase due to the wheel will not work. The fact is that by increasing the diameter, the manufacturer reduces the rubber of the tire along the profile.

Example: 195/65 R15 and 225/45 R17. As you can see, the radii of the wheels differ by 2 inches, but due to the different tire profiles, the ground clearance will be almost the same.
If possible, increase the radius of the wheel without changing the profile size, such action will result in an increase in ground clearance.

However, when deciding how to increase ground clearance due to the size of the wheel and the profile of the rubber, there is a high risk of adversely affecting road safety. It is possible that the speedometer does not work correctly, the speed sensor is damaged, and related problems may arise.
On high tyres, it is possible for the wheel to start rubbing against the wheel arches.

The price of such parts is higher than rubber counterparts, but lower than the most popular aluminum ones. The latter is used especially often. But the ABS-plastic material turned out to be devoid of all the previously listed disadvantages. These spacers are durable, invisible and will not oxidize or corrode.

Note that if the spring collapses, the spacer will no longer help.
The reason is that the distance between the coils in the spring is reduced and as a result there is less operating stroke before the coils come into contact.
When mounted on a good spring, the spacer can increase ground clearance. However, the parameters of the shock absorber will change, the compression stroke will increase, and the recoil - less.
In case of natural aging of the vehicle body, it is appropriate to install spacers, there will be no harm from it.

Spacers are moderately priced, so they can be used by anyone who needs a ground clearance increase. Installation work is simple, done quickly enough. As a result, the gap increases by 2-3 cm. It is no longer necessary to avoid damaging the vehicle and this increase in ground clearance will protect the underside of the vehicle from damage.

Disadvantages when installing spacers

Rules for using spacers to increase ground clearance

It is not recommended to install metal attachments if they have not undergone anti-corrosion treatment;
Restriction for owners of front-wheel drive cars: no more than 20 mm is allowed to be lifted in front of the car;
In most cases (up to 80%), if the shock absorber is not mounted close to the spring, to ensure operational safety it is necessary to install spacers both under the springs and under the shock absorbers for synchronized operation;
Make sure the lean angle is within acceptable limits when increasing the vehicle's rear clearance, especially when cornering at high speed. As a rule, a height of more than 30 mm is not allowed.
An increase in ground clearance of more than 30 mm can make it impossible to apply the camber correctly on the machine.
